The Habits of War Before TH7

Before we get to any specific advice, I should share a metaphor.

Any military training will involve soldiers learning to march in formation, often while carrying heavy loads.  There are obvious benefits to this. But when actual war happens, no one marches in formation.  The marching served to cement habits of teamwork and to build certain muscles.   But the end goal was never to become experts at marching.

Most of Clash of Clans is spent at town hall level 7 and above.   This is great, because war before town hall seven is dreadful.   Until you get that fourth army camp, the clan castle defenders and spring traps use up so much of your attacking army that it is very difficult to reliably three-star an opponent of high enough difficulty to provide a satisfying challenge.

Therefore, nothing you learn about war before town hall level 7 matters for its own sake.   War before town hall level 7 is like marching in formation.

The only part that is actually important is to establish a few important habits:
  • how to pick a target that follows the golden rule of clan war strategy
  • how to decide which type of attack to use, and plan the attack
  • how to deploy troops according to the roles of scouting-wallbreaking, luring, tanking, and DPS*
  • how to lure out clan castle defenders
  • how to deploy troops in the best locations, with the best timing

*DPS is "damage per second" and refers to troops deployed towards the end of an attack to demolish unprotected buildings before the time limit runs out
